CHEA Award for HWC

I am pleased to announce that Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, has won the Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s 2013 CHEA Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning OutcomesIn joining a select group of community colleges who have won this award, our faculty have demonstrated excellence as recognized in the announcement:

The 2013 CHEA Award recognizes the college’s assessments of student learning outcomes, which have influenced course sequencing, pre-requisites, teaching strategies, faculty development and institutional policies.

While success has many fathers, the Assessment Committee of Faculty Council, ably led by Professor Michael Heathfield and assisted by Professor Jennifer Asimow, deserve the lion’s share of the credit. Also deserving of credit is Associate Vice Chancellor Cecilia Lopez, who catalyzed a culture of assessment at HWC when she was Vice President here.

One of our key initiatives in the past year has been to “Build on a Culture of Assessment.” It is gratifying to see the Faculty’s efforts to improve the understanding of student outcomes recognized and celebrated. I commend our Faculty for their efforts.

Representatives from CCC, including AVC Lopez and Professor Heathfield, will join Vice President Martyn next week in DC to receive the award.
