This morning we kick off Faculty Development Week at Malcolm X College. What has changed since HWC faculty left for the summer session?
Most visibly, we have wrapped the second floor with brightly colored window coverings announcing to the world who we are and what we do. Virtually transparent from the inside of the second floor, the bright orange wraps show pictures of our graduates and help differentiate us from the office buildings around us.
We have three new faculty who will join us at FDW and in the coming year – Cynthia Cerrentano in Social Science, LaNisha Thomas in Mathematics, and Amy Rosenquist in English. Please seek them out this week and make them feel a part of the Harold Washington College family. Dr. Khalid Uddin is also joining us in Biology, moving from KKC. We have a new researcher, George Calisto, who will be helping us track KPIs and other critical data to ensure we hit our numbers.
We have a new hiring system, Taleo, that will help us better manage applications and prospective candidates through the hiring process, cutting down on the amount of paperwork department chairs will have to manage in faculty hiring. Faculty may also notice the new CCCWorks time clocks that have been placed strategically throughout the building. No worries yet – we are only starting with a pilot of NBF personnel.
We have a new budget, so faculty will get paid in the coming year, but CCC is joining the rest of the modern world in moving to payment in arrears, which means that after an August 23 loan payment, paychecks will come two weeks after we work the time period. That change will mean fewer off-cycle checks and payroll errors.
Wilbur Wright College has a new President, Dr. David Potash, for which I am probably the most grateful person at CCC, as I now get to return to my full-time duties at HWC. Kennedy-King College has a new Interim President, Arshele Stevens, who moves from OIT at DO. Craig Lynch now takes on double duty as the Chancellor’s Chief of Staff and the interim CIO. And probably of most interest to faculty, Dr. Vernese Edghill-Walden is our new Provost for CCC.
We have new leadership in Student Government and Phi Theta Kappa. I have met with both groups of students and have high hopes for their contributions to the college this year.
We have a new insurance industry offering, with three new business classes. Please consider advising students to take advantage of these new offerings.
Otherwise, I hope the college feels comfortably the same. Students are lining up for registration. Rich Wren’s crew has been cleaning, polishing, painting and repairing throughout the summer. The college looks great, and the staff are eagerly awaiting your return for the start of a new academic year.
Welcome back, Faculty. I will see you at MXC this morning.
