More than one friend emailed to make sure I had seen this article from Sunday’s New York Times, “A Dorm for All Colleges.” The article highlights the great work Raul Raymundo and his Resurrection Project have done, including the dorm space they have created for students. Teohua Nieto, one of HWC’s students, is featured. They also discuss Megan Galarza, a student from Truman.
Sometimes when I talk to students late at night, hanging around in the lobby, I ask them why they are there. They tell me, “President Laackman, this is the one place in my life where I feel safe.” Kudos to The Resurrection project for creating another safe space for our students.

This article both inspires and breaks my heart. The struggles our students face can be so dangerous, so overwhelming – this is such a wonderful project to help some of them find a safe home. I hope it expands!
And people wonder why I love my job. It’s because I get to teach students like Teohua (not just like him; I’ve had the privilege of learning with him this semester, and he is every bit as remarkable as the author of the article and his mother suggest). These students and their families have invested so much of themselves in order to not just receive but actively engage in their education. I share Rachel’s hope that this project expands. Thank you for highlighting it. I hope that we as a college can explore other possibilities to offer students safe spaces and enhance their college experience by creating supportive communities for them both on and off campus.
