Caught in a Mousetrap

I attended the opening night of The Loop Players performance of “The Mousetrap.” It brought back fond memories of hiding under my bedspread with a flashlight reading Agatha Christie novels after my bed time. I urge all members of the HWC community to take advantage of the opportunity to see the talents of staff andContinue reading “Caught in a Mousetrap”

Word Clouds Cause Death

I used word clouds(1), created through Wordle, to show faculty and staff the results of my one-on-one discussions. Not surprisingly, “students” was the single most-cited word through all of my discussions. I was nonplussed, then, to read this post arguing that the use of word clouds led to the lack of critical thinking about the warContinue reading “Word Clouds Cause Death”

Student Success – URC

In this way overdue post, HWC and Professor Tom Higgins are again in the news. This article from Science Careers talks about research as a key to student success. These are great examples ofContinue reading “Student Success – URC”

The discussion was well attended. I think President Munroe did a stellar job getting the word out at MXC, andContinue reading “Lt. Gov. Visit (Amended)”

New York Times Mention of HWC Encore Program

I led with this exciting announcement at last Friday’s State of the College address, but I wanted to provide the reference here. John Hader was quoted in the New York Times article “Teaching as a Second, or Even Third, Career” on Friday regarding his work on the Encore Program here at the college. I wanted toContinue reading “New York Times Mention of HWC Encore Program”

Recognition for 10,000 Small Businesses

Yesterday, Mayor Emanuel announced the 10,000 Small Businesses initiative. Harold Washington College will host this City Colleges-wide effort to help small businesses grow and hire more workers. Faculty from most CCC colleges are currently participating in their own training to learn about the program and the specific modules they will teach beginning in January. I wasContinue reading “Recognition for 10,000 Small Businesses”
